"Installing" .pkg title updates via FTP?

I need to update GT5, 19 updates about 4 gigs worth. I have all the .pkg's downloaded to my PC. Can I just extract those on my PC then FTP them into the proper game dir on my PS3?

Or is it not that simple?

Actually scratch that, I'll just launch the game and install them that way. Just updated to 4.3, never had my PS3 online so I never updated titles like "normal" people. lol
