PS3 Firmware 3.42 Help

Good morning everyone,

I am very new to this forum and even newer to the PS3 scene.
I purchased myself a PS3 for $60 the other day and i am looking to jailbrake it.

The firmware loaded on the device is 3.42

Now i have no idea if this is stock or if its an altered one or anything.

My questions are what is the best firmware to be using?

I want to be able to play burnt games or games off the harddrive.

Could someone point me in the right direction and explain some of the differences.
