flashed...bricked...saved...how???

If anyone had time to comment on the general weirdness that just happened to me, it would be great:

Was trying to downgrade/jb PS3 with e3 flasher using the newish methods found in these forums.
Couldn't get past the dongle part (I have PS3break)...decided to order a new dongle, as that seemed the only thing that could be holding me up.
Got bored, and tried a few other methods of flashing (flash fun etc)...
Bricked it. (YLOD)
Saved it, but could never get past the "Insert usb controller" screen. Console always coming back to the screen.
Decided to try get back to "square one" and forget about flashing altogether.
Bricked it.
Somehow machine just rebooted back to "normal", and can now play games, get on psn ETC, all as before.

I guess I am wondering if I am really back to a clean state? I was still on a patched NOR. Am I safe as is, or should I really try restore original?

Lastly, the fan is ominously quiet since I put the machine back together. It spins to full speed on turning on, then drops down to super-silent (but it works, as I can see it spinning when the machine is opened). My PS3 was always a noisy cow before. Should I be worried?

I guess the fan issue makes me worry about heat. Does anyone clean the old thermal paste and replace it when closing the console again?

Sorry for such a ramble and asking so many varied questions.
If you don't have anything better to do and can answer me, it would be great and I'd appreciate it.

Cheers,
Jim
